CBD Oil: 5 Medicinal Uses and Benefits

Updated: Jun 26, 2023

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most notable cannabinoids that is found in the marijuana plant. Unlike THC, CBD lacks psychoactive effects, meaning it does not produce the ‘high’ feeling that is often associated when consuming cannabis. This makes CBD a great option for patients who are looking for relief without the cognitive effects as it offers numerous medicinal benefits. Let’s take a look at a few ways it can help.

What Are The Benefits Of CBD Oil?

1. Reduce Inflammation and Pain

Studies have shown that CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). When CBD is consumed, it binds to the receptor sites within our body. This results in pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects which help with alleviating cases of pain and swelling. CBD can be found in multiple forms such as oil and edibles (chocolate, gummies, etc). In addition, CBD comes in a topical form, which can be applied directly to the problem area on the skin for localized relief.

2. Anxiety Relief

Anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults over the age of 18 every year, making it the most common mental illness in the U.S. The calming properties found in CBD can not only help alleviate anxiety alone, but it can also be beneficial for providing relief for other types of anxiety disorders including OCD, PTSD, social anxiety and panic disorder.

3. Improve Sleep

If you struggle with insomnia, CBD can o help you get a good night’s rest. As discussed above, CBD can be helpful for alleviating anxiety. If anxiety is the cause of your sleep problems, using CBD can help calm the mind and fall asleep faster. A recent study conducted by the Permanente Journal showed that out of 72 adults who consumed CBD on a regular basis, 66.7% of them had improved sleep scores and 79.2% had lower anxiety levels just after the first month.

4. Skin Conditions

Due to CBD’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it can help improve a variety of skin conditions including atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and itchy skin. CBD can also be used to reduce and fight against acne as it helps decrease the production of sebum in the skin.

5. Anti-Seizure

A study was conducted in 2016 which included 214 participants who were suffering from epilepsy. Throughout this study, participants added an oral dose between 2 to 5mg of CBD every day to their existing epilepsy medication and it was monitored over the next 12 weeks. The results showed that participants experienced 36.5% fewer seizures per month.

Overall, research has shown that CBD has promising effects to help alleviate specific symptoms, especially due to its lack of cognitive effects and possible lower potential of experiencing side effects compared to traditional medications.
